Funny how life changes your plans… 19 months ago I had every intention to begin blogging regularly.
I was motivated to begin blogging. I had a series of ideas that I wanted to write about. I was looking for an escape from a job/position/role that I very uncertain about.
After my first & only post, my family and I went on a week-long vacation to Mexico. I had hoped the time away from work would give me the opportunity to recharge and return fully refreshed. That was not the case and shortly thereafter, I realized being a Site Reliability Engineer was not something I wanted to be (DevOps type engineer is more my cup of tea) and that it was time to begin looking for a new job. I spent the next four months searching for something better to come along, which left me drained and not motivated to work on a blog.
When I found that something better, I spent nearly six months with my nose down trying to learn the ins and outs of a complex application and how to automate the deployment of it. This too left me drained and not motivated to work on a blog.
Then came COVID-19 and all the changes that happened to come along with it. Kids attending class from home, spouse attempting to work from home for the first time in career. I was also trying to convert from being a contractor to a full-time employee at this new job. My application team was attempting multiple major releases over this span. All of this was draining and providing a lack of motivation to work on a blog.
I was also attempting preparing for the AWS DevOps Professional certification. I would begin studying in preparation of taking the exam, then one of these other distractions would come along, and I wouldn’t feel prepared for the exam and push it off until later. This happened so many times that even with an extension of six months to re-certify for the AWS Developer Associate, I wasn’t prepared and took that exam with less than a week to spare. Again, I was drained all the time and didn’t want to work on a blog.
This is when I realized that this is just how it was going to be. If I wanted to work on a blog, I just needed to sit down, start writing, and preparing what I want to share with the world.
